How to Read the Tide

The one piece of knowledge that changes every beach trip

The tide is the single most important variable in beach digging, and most families either ignore it entirely or check it once and misread the information. Understanding the tide — when it is rising, when it is falling, how fast it is moving, and how this changes what is possible on a given beach — transforms how you plan and execute a beach dig. This guide is not about becoming a tidal expert; it is about knowing the few things that actually matter for a family with spades.

Safety: Never dig between the sea and a cliff, headland, or rocky outcrop without knowing the tide times — beaches that seem accessible can become cut off at high tide. This is a genuine danger on some UK beaches. Check the specific safety information for your beach before visiting.

The Basic Cycle

The UK has two high tides and two low tides roughly every 24 hours and 50 minutes. This means tide times shift by about 50 minutes each day — so if high tide was at 10am today, it will be at roughly 10:50am tomorrow. Low tide is the best time to be on the beach: you have the most sand exposed, the firmest conditions for digging, and the most time before the water returns. Arriving at low tide and leaving as the tide turns gives the best session.

How to Read a Tide Table

A tide table lists the time and height of each high and low water. The height is in metres above chart datum (the lowest possible tide). A big number at high water means a high high-tide — more of the beach will be covered. A small number at low water means a very low tide — more beach exposed. Spring tides (around full and new moon, every two weeks) have the biggest tidal range. Neap tides (halfway between) have a smaller range. Spring tides give the biggest canvas for digging; neap tides are safer for beginners because the water moves less dramatically.

The Rule of Twelfths

The tide does not rise or fall at a constant rate. It moves slowly at first (just after high or low water), accelerates to maximum speed at mid-tide, then slows again. Roughly: in the first hour after low water, the tide rises by 1/12th of its total range. In the second hour, 2/12ths. In the third and fourth hours (the middle of the tide), 3/12ths each. Then 2/12ths, then 1/12th again. Practically: the tide is fastest and most dangerous in the two to three hours around mid-tide. Plan to be well clear of the water's edge during this period.

What This Means for Digging

Dig on a falling tide — you always have more beach ahead of you. If you arrive at high tide, the beach is at its smallest and you are digging against the clock. If you arrive at low tide on a big spring tide, you may have three to four hours of a broad, firm beach. The best projects — long channels, large-scale tunnels, ambitious moat systems — need a falling or low tide to give you time. Always note what the tide is doing when you arrive. A stick pushed into the sand at the water's edge, checked every 20 minutes, tells you immediately whether the tide is coming in or going out.

Practical Tools

The Tide Times app (BBC Weather also includes tides) gives accurate local tide information for most UK beaches. Search by beach name or nearby headland. Save the tide times for your specific beach in advance — mobile signal on some beaches is poor. The Met Office tide prediction tables are the most accurate for the UK. In France, Portugal, and Spain, Maree.info and similar regional tools work well. Always check tides for your specific location — tide times can vary significantly along even a short stretch of coastline.
