About This Site

This site started the way most good ideas do: standing on a beach, spade in hand, wondering if there was a better way to answer the question every child asks the moment they hit the sand.

"What hole should we dig?"

With four children, we've had a lot of practice. We've dug moats in Cornwall and sand pools in Brittany. We've attempted tunnels in wet Scottish sand and buried each other in the dunes of Northumberland. We've learned — through collapsed walls, flooded dens, and perfectly timed incoming tides — that where you dig matters as much as what you dig.

Different beaches call for different holes. The right hole on the wrong beach is a frustrating afternoon. The right hole on the right beach, in the right season, is the kind of thing children remember for years.

This guide is our attempt to cross-reference that knowledge: eight beach types, thirteen hole types, four seasons, and every combination thereof. We hope it saves you some trial and error — or at least makes the trial and error more interesting.

Safety

Beaches are wonderful places and hole digging is a safe, excellent activity for children of all ages. A few things to keep in mind:

• Always check local tide times before you start. A hole dug just below the high-water mark is the ocean's problem within the hour.
• Keep walls sloped, not vertical. Vertical sand walls collapse without warning. Slope them outward as you dig deeper.
• Never dig deeper than waist height without shoring. A buried child can mean a buried chest — keep it fun, not frightening.
• Fill in every hole before you leave. An uncovered hole after dark is a genuine hazard for walkers and beach rescue services.
• Supervise young children near the sea at all times, particularly on tidal beaches where conditions change quickly.

A Note on Seasons

We've written seasonal tips throughout the guide because beach conditions vary enormously by time of year. Spring sand is different from summer sand. A winter beach in the right kit is a very different experience from a crowded August afternoon. We've tried to make each page useful year-round, not just in peak season.
