Three miles of Atlantic-facing golden sand backed by dunes, with powerful surf rolling in and beautiful digging conditions in the sheltered sections away from the main break. The sand is medium-grained, packs well, and stays damp at the right depth even on hot summer days. For a sand pool, the area around Barricane at the north end is sheltered and perfect. For moats and channels, the main beach offers unlimited space.

Flat Sandy Beach — The classic digging paradise

Fine to medium grain

Tides

Good tidal range exposes substantial extra sand at low tide. The gradient is gentle — tide comes in slowly and predictably.

Safety: Woolacombe has strong surf and rip currents — swim only between the lifeguard flags. For digging, the area around Barricane Beach at the north end is sheltered and much calmer.
