Holkham Bay
Norfolk, England
The crown jewel of British beach digging.
The crown jewel of British beach digging. Holkham's vast tidal flats extend hundreds of metres at low tide, backed by pine-fringed dunes that give it an almost otherworldly atmosphere. The firm, wet sand holds channels and pools in a way that few other beaches match. You can walk for ten minutes from the dune edge and still be a long way from the sea — the scale of the canvas is humbling. The channel and dam system here can extend for truly spectacular lengths.
Best Seasons
Beach Type
Firm, compacted wet sand or silty mud — excellent for holding deep holes
Tides
One of the most dramatic tidal beaches in England. Check times carefully — the difference between low and high tide is enormous and the flat fills quickly.
