About This Hole

A cone-shaped mound with a deep central pit. Water poured into the top seeps through and emerges from holes dug around the base — or if you're lucky with your sand conditions, the top collapses in a dramatic implosion. Less about the digging and more about the theatre of water meeting sand architecture.

Gently sloping beaches with fine to medium sand — the gold standard for hole digging. The sand is usually damp enough to hold shape a foot or two down, making these beaches ideal for almost every hole type. Common on Atlantic and Gulf coastlines.

Safety — Beach: Always dig at least 15 metres from the shoreline. Wet sand walls can collapse quickly — keep walls wide and sloped.

How to Dig It — Flat Sandy Beach Edition

Conditions on this beach: Fine to medium grain. Low gradient means the tide comes in slowly and predictably, giving you good warning to abandon ship.
  1. Build a solid cone mound, at least 50cm high and 80cm across at the base.
  2. Pack it firmly with wet sand, patting down as you go.
  3. Dig a narrow central pit from the top down, stopping 10cm from the base.
  4. Poke three or four small channels from the base outward at ground level.
  5. Slowly pour a bucket of water into the top.
  6. Watch water ooze from the base channels — the 'lava' effect.
  7. For the collapse version: fill the pit rapidly with lots of water.

Variations: Add red food colouring to the water for full volcanic drama (pack it from home). Build a ring of stones around the base to channel the 'lava flow'.

Damp sand holds the cone shape well. Good season for slow, theatrical pours.
