About This Hole
Two people dig from opposite sides of a sand mound and try to connect underground. The moment a hand reaches through from the other side is one of beach digging's great payoffs. Requires firm, damp sand and a mound of at least 60cm high. More engineering than excavation.
About This Beach
At low tide, tidal flats expose enormous areas of firm, wet sand or silt stretching hundreds of metres from the high-water mark. This gives you hours of digging at low tide with the bonus of watching the sea slowly reclaim your work. Common around estuaries and sheltered bays.

What You'll Need

How to Dig It — Tidal Flat Beach Edition
- Build or identify a firm sand mound at least 60cm high.
- Two diggers start on opposite sides at ground level, angling slightly upward.
- Dig slowly and carefully — the roof needs to bear the weight above.
- Keep the tunnel no wider than 20cm to reduce collapse risk.
- As you get deeper, switch to hands rather than spades for control.
- When close, wiggle fingers through and feel for the other side.
- Collapse the tunnel fully before letting children near it.
Variations: For a simpler version, dig from one side only and see how deep you can go before it collapses. For older children, try an L-shaped tunnel around a corner.

Spring
Ideal conditions — damp sand holds the tunnel roof well.

Only attempt in damp sand below the dry surface layer. Dry sand tunnels collapse instantly.

Wet sand makes this almost too easy. The tunnel stays open longer.
