A barrier island beach of fine Atlantic sand near Aveiro, famous for its candy-striped houses. The sand is pale, fine, and extends for miles in either direction. The Atlantic here is cooler than the Algarve, but the beach conditions are excellent — flat, wide, and firm. The lagoon on the inland side of the island creates interesting tidal effects and the sand quality throughout is first-rate. Very popular with Portuguese families who know their beaches.
