A wild, unspoilt Atlantic beach in southern Andalucía with extraordinary fine white sand and a dramatic backdrop of the Punta Paloma dune system. The sand here is some of the finest and whitest in mainland Europe — soft as powder when dry, perfect for digging when damp near the waterline. The beach faces Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar and the Levante wind makes it notoriously breezy. Build your den on the sheltered side of the dunes.

Beach Type

Flat Sandy Beach — The classic digging paradise

Fine to medium grain

Tides

Modest Mediterranean-influenced tidal range — more consistent beach conditions than Atlantic beaches. The strip of damp sand near the waterline is always workable.

Safety: The Levante and Poniente winds can be very strong and blow sand aggressively. The sea at Bolonia can be rough — check conditions before swimming. No lifeguard cover.
