Sand Maze
On a Tropical Coral Sand Beach
Dig a labyrinth, then race to find your way out — adapted for tropical coral sand beach conditions.
About This Hole
A network of shallow trenches dug into a grid or spiral pattern, forming a walkable maze at ankle height. Unlike most beach holes, this one is about the layout as much as the digging — plan a path with dead ends and a single route through, then challenge someone to walk it (or race them through it) once it's finished.
About This Beach
Fine, white coral sand beaches found in tropical and subtropical regions. The sand is incredibly fine and bright, and stays cool a few centimetres below the sun-baked surface. It holds moisture well and packs firmly when wet, making it brilliant for intricate constructions. The warm water and calm conditions make this the most pleasant digging environment of all.

What You'll Need
- spade
- rake or stick for marking lines
How to Dig It — Tropical Coral Sand Beach Edition
- Mark out your maze layout first by scratching lines into the sand with a stick or the edge of a rake — plan it before you start digging.
- Dig each marked line into a shallow trench, 10–15cm deep, piling the spoil to form low walls on either side.
- Keep trench width consistent, about one foot-width, so it's clear which path is the route.
- Leave one entrance and one exit, with enough dead ends and turns in between to make it a genuine challenge.
- Once finished, time yourself or a friend walking the route, or try it blindfolded (with someone guiding for safety) for an extra challenge.
Variations: Build a spiral maze instead of a grid for a different visual effect, or add a second, false exit to catch people out. For younger children, keep the maze simpler with fewer dead ends.
Seasonal Tips for Tropical Coral Sand Beach
Spring
Cool, firm sand holds trench walls well — good conditions for a more ambitious, larger maze.
On this beach in spring: Surface sand dries and collapses quickly in heat. Work near the waterline where sand stays damp. Sun protection essential.
Summer
Dry surface sand can collapse into shallow trenches — dig slightly deeper than usual to compensate, down to the damper layer.

Autumn
Damp sand from recent rain packs firmly and holds a maze's walls especially well.

Winter
Cold, wet sand is ideal for trench walls that hold their shape — just dress warmly for a longer digging session.
