It holds moisture well and packs firmly when wet, making it brilliant for intricate constructions. The warm water and calm conditions make this the most pleasant digging environment of all.

How to Dig It — Tropical Coral Sand Beach Edition

Conditions on this beach: Very fine coral and limestone sand — almost powder-like when dry, packs extremely well when damp. Tropical beaches often have minimal tidal range, giving you more consistent working time.

Find a willing volunteer and agree on the rules (arms in or out?).
Have the volunteer lie flat on their back, arms by their sides.
Begin piling and patting sand over the legs, working upward.
Pack it firmly but not so tight they can't wriggle free.
Leave the head, neck, and hands (optional) clear at all times.
Sculpt the covering — a mermaid tail, a rocket ship, a monster body.
Take the photo. Let them escape.

Variations: Classic mermaid or merman with a sculpted tail. A superhero emerging from the ground. A body-less head. Add pebble eyes and seaweed hair for the photo.

Use dry sand from above the tideline — the wet stuff is too cold. Bring a blanket to lie on underneath.
