A wide, flat estuary beach where the Mawddach meets Cardigan Bay, with sand of exceptional quality for digging. The estuary setting produces firm, cohesive sand that holds deep holes and channels remarkably well. The beach stretches several miles south from the town and at low tide becomes enormous. The mountain backdrop of Cadair Idris makes this one of the most scenically dramatic digging beaches anywhere in Britain.

Fine silty sand mixed with river sediment — firm and cohesive

Tides

Large tidal range. The estuary exposes vast areas at low tide. The firmest, most workable sand is found in the lower beach zones revealed at low water.

Safety: The Mawddach estuary has strong currents near the river channel — keep children well away from the main channel. The main beach to the south of town is safer.
